So we have been pretty bad at keeping our weekend photos going... but I promise we have excuses.
On Feb 22nd at 2 am, R and I got in our car and started our 17 hour journey to Cape Town. We stayed in Cape Town for 4 days with his fabulous sister and pretended that we lived in her fabulous suite in Fresnaye overlooking the ocean. Some of the highlights were a 12 course seafood lunch at die Strandloper (1), wine tasting at the ever so posh Steenberg Vineyards (2), bubbly tasting on the same estate at Gorgeous by Graham Beck (4) and climbing up Lion's head one morning (3).
We then boogied off to Herolds bay to visit our friends who live in Sweden. We spent 4 days there on the beach. R surfed, and I tanned/burnt my body on the beach while reading a great book ( The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry - read it... do it...). I don't have one picture to show from this time but I do have a random photo of our friends (5), and a photo from The Owlhouse which we stopped by in Nieu Bethesda on our long trip back to White River.
Fabulous trip, which caused R and I to start speaking like Capetonians - "totes cray-cray". Can't wait to go back again. If you want more recommendations for the Cape Town area, feel free to contact us.

While we're in the same place for the next few months we've invited guests to contribute to There & Here by telling us what they love about their favourite place in the world. Our guest this week is Lucia from Cape Town, South Africa.
What I love about London is it's a global village.
As a South African-Italian girl I’ve always had a heart divided quite strongly and loyally in two. South Africa is home and Italy is my favourite place to go on holiday. But the city that has my heart right now is London. Why? It’s the perfect balance of creative, quirky and worldly. It’s history and charm holds its own mixed in with the multicultural energy of the city. The first time I visited London I was 16. It was my first overseas and my first European experience, and I fell in love with the bustle, the red busses, the sights and (of course) the shopping! Having returned after more than a decade, it is like meeting up with an old friend; something special. And after living in a small town in Italy for a while its big enough for me to ‘get lost’ in, all the while knowing you’re never really lost in London. I get my fix of markets and exhibitions, designer cupcakes and charity shop gems. Whether a Friday pub night with the family or a day of museums and markets with lovely friends there is never a shortage of fun to be had in London town.
Photo captions (clockwise from left): 1. Borough Market in South East London: one of my favourite food markets in the city with delicious everything! 2.Three Bobbies in front of Big Ben (couldn’t resist the alliteration there, sorry). 3.The Book Club in the creative Leonard Street – from ping pong to a cup of tasty coffee with a friend. This is the place. 4. A rhino for sale at the Sunbury Antiques Market (every collector’s dream – there is SO much choice!) held at Kempton Park Race Course twice a month. Bring a car to carry away all the great stuff you’ll be tempted to buy! 5. City of London sign near Tower Bridge 6.The view from the Tate Modern across the Millennium Bridge to St Paul’s Cathedral: one of my favourite views of the city.
Lucia Viglietti is a designer who has worked in publishing in Cape Town, first at Real Simple South Africa and then at Marie Claire South Africa. Last year she moved to Italy for five wonderful months and has since spent time in London, New York and The Hague. She has plans to travel some more before calling London home. For freelance design work or just to get in touch you can email her on lucia.ottavia@gmail.com or find her on Facebook or Pinterest.

Shoo! What a week. Thanks to the lovely Jean Mortlock we had such a fabulous time in Cape Town. Rather than give you a play by play of what we did, here are a list of the highlights of our trip in categories. Easy, eh?
Food & Coffee (our favourites first!)
Sidewalk Cafe - Fabulous place down the road from Jean where we spent a few hours setting up our guest posts.
Haas - Design overload. lovely coffee and men in top hats.
Dear Me - Delicious lunch, fabulous atmosphere.
Skinny Legs & All - Great coffee! We also met a beautiful little italian greyhound friend there with very skinny little legs.
El Burro - Great mexican food, fun vibe, awesome decor & brilliant brand identity.
Elephant & Barrel - Cozy and vibrant pub in Franschoek to watch the Springboks.
Olympia Cafe - DELICIOUS croissants for breakfast on the road in Kalk Bay.
Wharfside Grill - In Hout Bay. After driving along the ocean all day, we were craving seafood so badly. This place definitely hit the spot.
West Street Cafe - In the Woodstock Foundry. Some of the best breakfasts we have had in a very long time.
Areas
Woodstock - The Old Biscuit Mill ( fabulous market on a saturday morning), The Woodstock Foundry (fabulous creative space), a visit to the Ogilvy Bar and beautiful graffiti art on every wall.
Cape Town City bowl - Where we wandered the streets in the rain, explored and drank way too much coffee.
Stellenbosch - Wine Tour heaven.
Franschoek - More wine tour bliss & pub beers.
Elgin - Stopped at Peregrin farmstall on the way in for some coffee & snacks then watched R race at Mofam in the South African canoe marathon championships.
Kalk Bay - First stop on our cape peninsula road trip, delicious breakfast and a great area to wander with lots of galleries and trendy shops.
Simonstown - Drove through this marine town on our cape peninsula trip.
Boulders Beach - Penguins!
Cape Point - The fog was so thick, we just drove up to the gate and the nice guard informed us that we probably wouldn't be able to see much
Kommetjie - Drove down to the beach on our cape peninsula trip.
Noordhoek - Checked out the Food Barn & had beers at the Toad both in the Noordhoek farm village.
Chapmans Peak - Iconic drive along the mountainside.
Hout Bay - Seaside lunch of WAY too much seafood.
Llandudno - Drove down to this residential beach and watched the after work surf crowd.
Camps Bay - Walked along the beach and wished it was summer. Drove along the oceanside road and wished we could afford to live there!
Signal Hill - Had a red wine toast here when we arrived and then watched the sunset from the same spot on our last night. Out of body experiences.
Wine Farms
Fairview - Wine and cheese tasting, goat tower and beautifully designed packaging.
Kanonkop - Second stop on a long day of wine tasting.
Morgenhof - And the third...
Bilton - Wine and chocolate pairing. The sauvignon blanc with lime white chocolate was to die for.
La Bri - More wine and more chocolate.
Haute Cabriere - One of our favourites, nestled right in the cellar.
Culture
Baxter Theatre - Last minute tickets to see comedian Pieter Dirk-Uys and hear a whirlwind history of South African politics.
Labia Cinema - Art house cinema where we saw The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We also could not read the name with a straight face.
Robben Island - Charlotte had already done it, Chelsea had to do it.
Everard Read Gallery - How Charlotte killed time during Chelsea's trip to the island.
Old Biscuit Mill - Saturday market filled with eclectic food, arts, crafts and fresh produce.
Woodstock Foundry - Collective art and gallery space.

While we're in the same place for the next few months we've invited guests to contribute to There & Here by telling us what they love about their favourite place in the world. Our guest this week is Jean from Cape Town.
What I love about The Baltic Sea is ...well, it’s The Baltic Sea.
From the world famous stylish furniture designers in Helsinki to The Scream in Oslo to the underground art gallery linking the suburbs of Stockholm.
The super slick blond and slim Swede’s to stern and bald Russian night club bouncers. The bicycles - the row upon row of bicycles. The tramline trail.
The Aurora Borealis. Danish street vendors selling sweet honey roasted walnuts in brown bags to ice cream in authentic waffle cups in Stockholm, to tasteless Russian salty sour fish ukha soup to herring dumplings in Helsinki. The efficiency of the bus. Vulgar Viking’s in Finland, to a marble sculptural park in Oslo to the pastel coloured fantasy like houses in Gdansk. Ancient cobbled walkways of Estonia to the Swedish countryside dotted lakes, streams and rolling hills which is the opposite to the divide between wealthy and poor of St. Petersburg. The intricate golden details lining the buildings while surrounded by the dirt stained walls, the dusty antique stalls, and cruel wild animal vendors caging tigers and bears. Only in Russia.
The mixture of design, culture, landscape and efficiency is like nothing I am accustomed to in the Republic of South Africa. For this reason, I like.
Jean Mortlock is a farm girl at heart but currently lives in Cape Town. She works as an Art Buyer for a leading advertising firm and constantly surrounds herself by design, photographers, colourful inspiration, illustrators, and beautiful chaos. She loves antique silver, hippy festivals, farmers markets, misty sunrises, handpicked flowers, cycling parallel with the ocean and never ending road trips. Lover of adventure and is thrilled by adrenalin. Jean is fascinated by the production of fine chocolate from cocoa, tea plantations, succulents, viticulture and barista’s. Jean wears red socks on Fridays.

This is the fourth week of our guest blog series to compare other parts of the world while Charlotte is visiting Canada for August & September. Our guests this week are foodies Tessa from Cape Town & Dan from Calgary.
This recipe was inspired by a friend of Tessa's who used to work at an awarding winning restaurant in Cape Town. They used to make a pickled aubergine pate and pair it with horseradish cream and beetroot. Tessa thought the pate idea was brilliant and after making it, She realised just how versatile it can be. She decided it would make a wonderful compliment to a newfound favourite appetiser of hers - Socca. This is essentially a thin pancake-like flatbread made from chickpea or “channa” flour. It comes out of the pan crispy and hard- perfect for a deliciously rich, creamy topping like a pate! With the sneaky addition of whole roasted garlic cloves and some fresh wild Arugula- this little appetiser could even be enjoyed as a meal in itself.

Socca
Ingredients:
1 cup chickpea flour
1 cup water
3Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt
1 cup chickpea flour
1 cup water
3Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt
Method: combine the flour and salt with the water and oil whisking the mixture until a smooth batter forms. Allow to rest for an hour. Heat a non-stick pan on high until it begins to smoke. Pour some of the batter into the pan and allow to cook like a pancake. Once the pancake starts to bubble and brown at the edges, flip over and cook the other side. The socca will look charred and begin to harden. Remove from the pan and allow to cool.
Pickled Aubergine pate
Ingredients:
2 aubergines
2.5 cups water
2.5 cups vinegar
1.5 Tbsp salt
1 Tbsp dried aregano
2 peppercorns
150g Crème fraiche
2 aubergines
2.5 cups water
2.5 cups vinegar
1.5 Tbsp salt
1 Tbsp dried aregano
2 peppercorns
150g Crème fraiche
Method: Combine the water, vinegar, salt and peppercorns in a pot and bring to the boil. Meanwhile cut the aubergines into rounds. Add the aubergines to the pot and bring down the heat to a simmer. Allow to simmer for 45mins. Meanwhile preheat oven to 200 degrees C and pop a bulb of garlic into the oven to roast (this is optional). Once the aubergines are pickled, drain them in a colander and spread onto a large baking tray. Roast them in the oven for another 45mins. They will soften and lose their shape. Once done, allow to cool. Add them to the crème fraiche and incorporate well to get a good pate consistency. Remove the garlic bulb from the oven and squeeze the flesh from the cloves. Set these aside.
To assemble: spread some of the pate onto the crisp socca, top with small pieces of (or whole!) roasted garlic cloves and to finish, garnish with some fresh green baby Arugula. So easy, so quick, and so delicious!
