Our Weekend - April 5-7, 2013

So both Chelsea and I have the lucky privilege of being bridesmaids this September! We both did our brides maids duties this weekend - my duties involved driving to Johannesburg to go the Bridal Expo with the rest of the bridesmaids. Before heading to Johannesburg I headed to the farm to see Rog ( see photo 6 - look how cool I am on the back of the truck will all my macadamia friends).  After driving to Joburg we started the night off at Mantra (3), an amazing Indian restaurant ( what made it even more amazing was the fact that we could bring our own booze...). After lots of champers and wine we headed to Mamma's Shebeen and drank far too much more and danced our bridal party asses off. I have only two pictures from that night, and you do NOT need to see those. I also believe there may be a video floating around of me trying to rap the entire "I like big butts" song...

Saturday we woke up with KILLER hangovers and decided that the bridal fair was something we were not capable of doing - so we made appointments to go Wedding dress shopping instead. I think Tanya ( the bride) found "the one". On Sunday, after a big breakfast with the gang, I rushed home to spend some quality time cuddling with my  darling cat on the couch (1) and of course R.

Didn't chat with Chelsea that much since I was away in Joburg but from the sounds of it the weather was quite crappy so she spent some time indoors drinking tea and reading 419 by Will Ferguson (2), then also headed bridesmaid dress shopping (4) on Saturday for her friend Amanda's wedding, and then escaped the cold again on Sunday to go on a date to see Jurassic Park in 3D ( I must be living in a cave, I had no idea this was out? I LOVE jurrasic park!) and then ate at Clive Burger (5).

yumm.. I could really go for a clive burger and beer right now...

Catherine Green - What I love about Paris

While we're in the same place for the next few months we've invited guests to contribute to There & Here by telling us what they love about their favourite place in the world. Our guest this week is Catherine from Johannesburg.

What I love about Paris is their amazing museums, interesting shops and beautiful architecture. Yes I know I am a walking cliché naming Paris. But if I’m honest it was one of the most magical places I have visited. I can’t wait to go back there one day.

The Musee d’Orsay is one of my favourite museums in Paris because of its architecture and the quality of its collection. The building is a conversion of the Orsay railway station, which was built for the Universal Exhibition in 1900.

One of my favourite pieces in the Musee d’Orsay is a sculpture by François Pompon. When I took this photo I decided not to crop out the old man on the left hand side – they seemed like kindred spirits.

Paris is a great city to wander around in. They have a great public bicycle rental service that allows you to navigate the city with ease. That‘s me in the blue dress eyeing a lovely collection of antique tins.

Parisian architecture is some of the finest in the world in my opinion. I particularly liked these two buildings because they juxtaposed old and new Paris.

Catherine Green is a copywriter and researcher based in Johannesburg.  She writes a blog called Wolf Eyebrows, a compendium of beautiful things that catch her eye. She is also the editor of NICE Magazine, an online magazine that showcases top-notch creative work from all over the world. Johannesburg & Pretoria

What a weekend!
Thursday we arrived in Johannesburg in the afternoon and headed into Illovo to check out Wolves Cafe. We ended up eating next door at The Good Luck Club. Both were fantastic, and we got what we were looking for - good food & a bottle of wine. After we filled our bellys, we headed to the Aparteid Museum. A very informative tour of the history of segregation in South Africa.

Friday we woke up and headed to Pretoria for some more history lessons. We passed the President's House, walked through the gardens at the Union Buildings, and climbed the stairs at the Voortrekker Monument. Ended our day with more good food & wine at Tribeca.

Friday evening we spent in Melville. We started at Cafe Mexicho for some beers & tequila shots (tequila shots with pineapple wedges & tabasco - a brilliant idea from our new friend Cuno). We then strolled around the corner to the Ant Cafe and ended our night off at The Ratz bar.

Saturday R arrived and drove us girls down to Newtown. We hit up the Neighbourgoods market, had coffee at Post and visited the CO-OP gallery (all recommendations from our online friend Catherine). We also discovered The Creative Block & The Shoe Shop (more photos of both of these on Chelsea's blog).

Sunday we woke up early to watch R compete in the Gauteng Canoe Marathon Championships (he came in first! Congrats R!). Afterwards we headed to Soweto to have a Shisa Nyama at 707 Panyaza. Shisa Nyama, literally meaning "burn the meat" in Zulu, is an informal braai with grilled meat, pap & chakalaka. This was by far one of the coolest things we have done so far, probably because it involves food, beer and eating with our hands.

All in all, we soaked in as much as we could the four days we were there. Joburg is an interesting and exciting city. We were lucky enough to have some great friends to drive us around on the massive highways and guide us around when we were driving on our own.

We are now back in the Slowveld, enjoying the fresh air and getting ready for our next adventure.

Relaxing Place - Catherine (Johannesburg)
